The Amex Gold turned 60 with 5x on prepaid hotels, and the $325 fee held flat
American Express refreshed the Gold Card on 30 April 2026 for its 60th anniversary: prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel now earn 5x (up from 2x), car rentals and cruises earn 2x, and the annual fee stayed at $325. A rare enhancement in a year of cuts.
Almost every card change we have written up this year took something away. This one adds, and it is worth marking precisely because it is rare. On 30 April 2026, its 60th anniversary, American Express refreshed the Gold Card with better earn rates and a couple of new benefits, and it did the thing issuers almost never do alongside an enhancement: it left the annual fee alone.
What got better
The permanent changes, effective with the refresh:

The hotel rate is the real one. Prepaid stays booked through Amex Travel now earn five points per dollar, matching the kind of travel-portal multiplier that usually lives only on cards with a much larger fee. The car-rental and cruise bump is smaller but points the same direction.
Two non-earning additions came with it: enrollment in Hertz Five Star status (vehicle upgrades and a free additional driver), and an updated dining-credit partner list. The $120-a-year dining credit ($10 monthly) is unchanged in size, but Buffalo Wild Wings and Wonder were added as eligible partners, replacing Goldbelly and Wine.com.
The limited-time piece
Separately, anniversary offers run on a clock. Card Members can enroll in Uber One and receive a one-time statement credit of up to $96 toward an annual membership, available through 30 October 2026. An annual Uber One membership costs $96, so for eligible members it covers a year. A Hotel Collection travel promotion runs through 15 July 2026. Treat both as time-boxed, not as part of the card's standing value.
Why the held fee matters
The context is a year in which premium travel cards moved the other way. The Amex Platinum went to $895 and the Chase Sapphire Reserve to $795, both with fee increases attached to their benefit changes. Against that backdrop, a card raising its most-used earn rate from 2x to 5x while holding its fee flat is a genuine improvement in net value, not a repricing dressed as one. If you already hold the Gold, the hotel multiplier is a straightforward gain on spend you were routing elsewhere.
What to do
If you carry the Gold, move prepaid hotel bookings you would have made anyway onto Amex Travel to capture the 5x, and enroll in the Uber One credit before 30 October if you use the service. If you are weighing the card, judge it on the permanent earn table and the standing credits net of the $325 fee, not on the anniversary offers, which expire.
