The math nobody on the bank's marketing page will tell you

💸

Cashback is the lazy default

Banks set cashback at ₹0.20-0.40/point because that's what 90% of cardholders pick. It's the "buy a Mercedes, drive it in first gear" redemption.

✈️

Transfer partners are the unlock

HDFC → Singapore KrisFlyer at 1:1 ratio. A 70K-mile business-class award to Europe = a ₹3-4L ticket. Math: each point ≈ ₹5. That's a 15× multiplier on cashback.

🏨

Hotel sweet spots compound

Marriott Cat 4 hotels at 25K Bonvoy points often cash-out at ₹15K rooms. That's ₹0.60/point — 2× the cashback rate. Stack with HDFC Marriott Bonvoy's 4x earn rate and the compounding is real.

Quick glossary

Transfer partner
An airline or hotel program your card's points can be moved to at a fixed ratio. Examples: HDFC → Singapore KrisFlyer (1:1), Axis EDGE → Marriott Bonvoy (5:4), Amex MR → British Airways Avios (1:1).
SmartBuy / iShop / EDGE portal
Cardholder-only booking portals (HDFC SmartBuy, ICICI iShop, Axis EDGE) where the same flight/hotel earns 5-10× the normal rate. The middle ground between cashback and transfer partners — easier than transfers, better than cashback.
Sweet spot
A specific redemption where points yield far more than typical. Example: 8,000 BA Avios for a short-haul Asia award that costs ₹15-20K cash — ~₹2/point.
Devaluation
When a program quietly increases the points required for a given award. Happens every 12-18 months on average. Strategy: burn points soon after earning, don't hoard.

FAQ

Are my HDFC points really worth more than ₹0.30 each?

If you redeem as statement credit, no — they're worth ~₹0.30. But transfer to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer at 1:1 ratio and the same point becomes worth ₹4-6 when redeemed for premium-cabin awards. On SmartBuy 10x partners, the same point is worth ₹1. Most cardholders never look past statement credit and leave 3-15× value on the table.

What is a "transfer partner" and why does it matter so much?

A transfer partner is an airline or hotel program that accepts your bank's points at a fixed ratio. HDFC Infinia transfers 1:1 to Singapore KrisFlyer. A SQ business-class award to Europe is ~70K miles for a flight that costs ₹3-4L cash. That's why 1 transferred point is worth ₹4-6 vs the ₹0.30 cashback baseline.

How accurate are the per-point INR values?

These are CONSERVATIVE estimates based on actual award-chart spot-checks across the last 6 months. We undervalue rather than overstate. Real value depends on which routes/dates you redeem — some redemptions yield 8-10 INR/point, others (one-way short-haul) drop to ₹1-2. Last reviewed: May 2026.

Why are my cashback points worth so little?

Banks set the cashback rate (typically ₹0.20-0.40/point) because it's the lazy default. Most cardholders redeem cashback, the bank profits, everybody wins (the bank). The math changes the moment you start using transfer partners or SmartBuy 10x boosters.

Do welcome bonuses really add up?

For premium cards, yes — meaningfully. Amex Platinum gives 1L MR points on ₹6L spend, worth ₹1.5-2.5L at best transfer redemptions. HDFC Infinia gives 12,500 points worth ₹50K+ as airmiles. The trick is timing — open the card right before a big planned spend (GST payment via Cred Pay, education fees, large purchases).

When should I devalue these calculations?

Quarterly. Programs devalue. HDFC stripped Vistara CV transfers post Air India merger. Amex shuffled Taj rates in 2024. We last reviewed in May 2026 — any change before then is reflected; later changes will show up in a future update.
